The five ages

  1. 1

    Crisis

    2023 · town-centre level 1

The fuel subsidy is gone and the naira floats. Ibadan, one of the largest cities in Nigeria, sprawls over its hills, its roads choked and its markets hit by prices that rise every week. Start from the basics: homes, markets, power and order.

  2. 2

    Recovery

    2024–2027 · town-centre level 4

The standard-gauge railway from Lagos, opened in 2021, ends at Moniya in the north of the city. Bring the trains, the university and the factories together, and fix the drains before the next flood.

  3. 3

    Boom

    2027–2032 · town-centre level 7

Warehouses and factories follow the railway, and the university’s laboratories start companies of their own.

  4. 4

    City of seven hills

    2032–2040 · town-centre level 10

Towers rise on the hills round Cocoa House, and the old rust-red roofs below are kept as they are.

  5. 5

    World stage

    2040s · town-centre level 13

Summits, a seat at the table and rockets on the pad. The city’s economy outgrows whole countries.
