1999–2000 · town-centre level 1Civilian rule returns in May 1999, and in October the first cargo of liquefied gas sails from the new plant on Bonny Island. Oil and gas money flows, but the creek communities say little of it reaches them.

2008–2010 · town-centre level 10In June 2009 the federal government offers the militants an amnesty: guns are handed in between August and October, and the creeks grow calmer.

- The first cargo of liquefied natural gas left Bonny Island on 9 October 1999.
- In June 2009 the federal government offered Niger Delta militants an amnesty; weapons were handed in between August and October 2009.
- Port Harcourt was founded in 1912 at the end of the railway from Enugu.
- Nigeria’s first oil refinery opened at Alesa-Eleme, near Port Harcourt, in 1965.
