- In 2000 Kano State extended Sharia law to criminal cases, for Muslims only.
- Kano stopped polio vaccination in 2003 over fears about the vaccine, and resumed in July 2004 with vaccine made in Indonesia.
- The Kofar Mata dye pits are said to date from 1498.
- Kano’s airport, in service since 1936, is the oldest in Nigeria.
- Nigeria returned to civilian rule on 29 May 1999, after more than fifteen years of military government.
- Commercial mobile phone service began in Nigeria in August 2001.
