1999–2000 · town-centre level 1Civilian rule returns in May 1999. The coal mines that built Enugu have all but stopped, and the city lives on government, trade and its colleges. Start with homes, markets, power and order.

2001–2004 · town-centre level 4Mobile phones arrive in 2001, and the east’s traders take to them at once. The hills round the city start to draw visitors to the pine forest at Ngwo and the lake resort.

- Coal was mined at Enugu from 1915; the Iva Valley mine opened in 1917.
- Enugu’s name comes from the Igbo for “the top of the hill”.
- The University of Nigeria opened at Nsukka, north of Enugu, on 7 October 1960.
- Work on Nike Lake Resort began in 1987.
- Nigeria returned to civilian rule on 29 May 1999, after more than fifteen years of military government.
- Commercial mobile phone service began in Nigeria in August 2001.
